Hurdle Mills' Holiday Calendar Lives on Its Farms, and Some of the Ticket Money Stays Local

Where does a community with no main street, no courthouse square and no parade route hold its holidays? In Hurdle Mills, the answer for November and December 2026 is a list of rural road addresses. These include Hawkins Loop, Millstone Road, Hester Road and Burlington Road. Every event on this season's calendar takes place at a farm, a church or the market at the crossroads.

Several of those events also send a set share of the ticket price to Person County causes, and one sends money to an animal group in neighboring Caswell. If you have a free Saturday this season, part of what you spend at these events goes to a local cause.

Here is how the season lines up, starting this weekend.

This Saturday, Nov. 7, has two good reasons to be on Burlington Road and Hawkins Loop

The first deadline is today. Clement Baptist Church's annual BBQ is Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8480 Burlington Road. It's takeout only, starts at 4 p.m., and costs $10 a plate or $10 a pound. If you want meat by the pound, the church's notice in Person County Life says preorders are due by Nov. 5 or sooner. That makes today, Thursday, Nov. 5, the last day to call ahead.

The morning of that Saturday belongs to a wreath workshop a few miles away. The BBQ starts at 4 p.m. and the workshop wraps up at 1 p.m., so you can do both on the same day.

The wreath workshop pays for school and community gardens

The Land at Hawkins Loop at 294 Hawkins Loop is a family-owned venue for nature-based events and retreats. It has pasture, trails, barns and places to stay overnight on 63 acres. Kat and Brendan Love own and care for the property, and the Courier-Times profiled them and the venue's events.

The Foraged Wreathmaking Workshop runs twice:

  • Saturday, Nov. 7: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 8: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Each session is a walk around the property with Master Gardeners. You learn about native plants, gather your own greenery and build a fresh wreath from what you collect. All materials are included. Tickets are $65.87 on Eventbrite.

According to the venue's event page, 20% of the proceeds go to school and community gardens in Person County, in partnership with the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Person and Granville Counties. The people teaching you are the same volunteers who help direct that money.

If you can't make either session, the Person County government calendar lists a Master Gardener Wreath Workshop at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Nov. 14 brings a trail 5K that ends at a pop-up farmers market

The next Saturday, Hawkins Loop hosts the Person County Farm-City Week 5K. You can run or walk the course through the property's pasture and forest trails. After the race there's a burrito made with local ingredients and a pop-up farmers market.

The basics, from the race's RunSignup page:

  • Date: Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026
  • Event window: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Race start: 9 a.m.
  • Price: $30
  • Registration closes: Friday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m.

Here too, 20% of registration fees go to Person County 4-H youth programs. Over eight days, Hawkins Loop hosts three events, and every one of them sets aside a fifth of the money for a county youth or garden program.

The farmers market makes the 5K a reasonable stop even if you don't run. Thanksgiving is less than two weeks later, and your holiday shopping can start with local growers.

Stocking the Thanksgiving table from Hester Road and the market

Two longtime Hurdle Mills names make up most of a holiday menu between them.

Pine Knot Farms at 8906 Hester Road is a certified organic farm. The owner's grandfather bought the land in 1912. Its fall crop is sweet potatoes: red Beauregards and white O'Henrys, which the farm describes as "perfect for holiday pies and casseroles." Gourmet magazine once featured its collard greens in its annual produce issue.

The owners, Stanley Hughes and Linda Leach-Hughes, received the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's 2013 Farmer of the Year award. In March 2022, the NC Rural Center named them Rural Entrepreneurs of the Year. The farm's website says you can find them on the farm Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plan a weekday stop before the holiday week if you want sweet potatoes straight from the field.

Hurdle Mills Market + Flat River Cafe covers what the farm doesn't. The market's site lists pork, chicken and beef cut fresh daily, plus:

  • house-made sausage and thick-cut bacon
  • free-range eggs
  • Maple View milk and butter
  • fresh fried pies
  • blackstrap molasses
  • jams, jellies and pickles
  • NC craft beer and wine
  • Flat River Cafe's chicken salad, BBQ, slaw, chili and potato salad

The store opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday and closes at 8 p.m., and Sunday hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The butcher works shorter hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday. If you're ordering a special cut for the holidays, that's the window that matters. The butchers also do custom cuts, slicing and deer processing. Weekly deals and meat bundles are posted on the market's Facebook page, and you can reach the clerks at (336) 364-1776.

Dec. 12 is the lavender shop's first holiday open house

The season ends on Millstone Road. Sunshine Lavender Farm at 4104 Millstone Road holds its Holiday Open Farm Day on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This one has a backstory. The farm opened its Lavender Love Shop & Farm Market on Feb. 14, 2026, so this December is the shop's first holiday season. The farm's events page says most items in the shop are $20 or less, and many of the handmade gifts are sold only at the farm.

The ticket page lists what's planned:

  • baked goods fresh from the oven, which you can preorder for pickup
  • the farm's lavender hot chocolate
  • door prizes every hour
  • a native tree seedling with a shop purchase
  • pet photos for a suggested $25 donation to the Animal Protection Society of Caswell County

Timing matters here more than anywhere else on the list. The farm only opens for prepaid ticketed events and preorder pickups. Without an event, online orders can be picked up on Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m., or at another time you arrange with the farm. If you want to walk the shop in person before the holidays, Dec. 12 is the day.
